A Close Encounter of the Seal Kind
Launching from Dartmouth over the weekend, Bertie and a few friends encountered a friendly young seal.
Sheltering behind a rock as a squall came through, we noticed this seal watching us. As the squall kept us there for some time, the seal became more and more inquisitive. Firstly, the seal started to sniff our boats, trying to get at the toggles. Then deciding we were friendly, the young seal decided to get more friendly, eventually trying to get on to our kayaks.

Brilliant. He looked very friendly!! Our encounter with a thwarted bull grey seal about 9pm on 18th January on Lady Isle in the Clyde was much briefer. We made ourselves scarce!! :o)
Not like the time that we came across the Seals at St. Abbs Bertie? They didn't seem to friendly!
Hi Ollie & Douglas, judging from your comments, maybe it's only those seals south of the border which are friendly? ;-)
Bertie, Moose, Jules and Zippy what an experience. It looked amazing. Did you have your sandwiches in that hatch Moose?
Look at Seal on port
We have seals often at our kayak club jetty.
also we meet in spring often Harbour Porpoise http://kvu.der-norden.de/Pinwand/Schweinswale.html
Have you ever seen the movie from Skippy, which was recorded by X-Ray-Hans from Kodiak where a young harbour seal hopped on kayaks somewhere in Alaskas Fjords ?? Years ago it went through all the worlds press. Even the internet was full of articles - this is one remaining reference http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EPG/is_5_35/ai_72887862

I wonder if that seal had learned from other humans that if he was cute and friendly they'd feed him?
Not necessarily a good thing, but sure is cute.
